When a 40-year-old legend who owns a version of the WBA welterweight title battles a 30-year-old star with the recognized world championship, it's a signficant event. Because the legend is future Hall-of-Famer and Filipino icon Manny Pacquiao, the show is even bigger. I've said before, this fight is the most important bout of the year, and that's even more confirmed with the cancellation of Canelo Alvarez's September 14 date.
The winner will set themselves up for further unification of the title in 2020 against the winner of the Errol Spence-Shawn Porter matchup, which is now scheduled for September 28. Beyond the titles, this fight is also significant because of Pacquiao's age. We never know how many more times we'll get an opportunity to watch him perform in the ring. Because he is a legend who is still competing at a high level, Pacquiao remains must-see TV if you're a fight fan.
The Undercard
The fights leading up to Pacquiao-Thurman aren't too shabby. There is a super middleweight title bout featuring undefeated champion Caleb Plant making the first defense of his IBF 168-pound crown against Mike Lee. That fight will be broadcast on FOX at 7 pm ET. Once the pay-per-view starts, we'll see Yordenis Ugas take on Omar Figueroa, Luis Nery vs. Juan Carlos Payano and Sergey Lipinets vs. John Molina Jr. Each of those fights has the potential to be exciting.
