Eumir Marcial finishes with silver at AIBA World Boxing Championships

Filipino fighter Eumir Marcial took home silver Saturday after a unanimous loss in the middleweight title bout at the AIBA World Boxing Championships in Ekaterinburg, Russia.

Hometown boxer Gleb Bakshi made an impression 15 seconds into the second round, launching a left hook to the jaw that floored Marcial. That sealed the deal for Bakshi with the judges, three of whom scored the fight 29-28 while the other two had it 29-27.

The knockdown roused the partisan crowd after an uneventful start. The second round was a different story, as Bakshi battered Marcial and opened a cut above his opponent's left eye.

The cut complicated things for Marcial the rest of the way, but the determined Zamboanga native was able to squeeze in a slew of hooks and straights into the Russian slugger.

The silver was a milestone for Marcial nevertheless, as he was the only Filipino to medal in the event. Other Filipinos who participated in this year's verstion of the biennial tournament in Russia's fourth largest city were Carlo Paala, Ian Clark Bautista, James Palicte and John Marvin.
